PPR Pipes for Pharmaceutical Plants
PPR (Polypropylene Random Copolymer) piping can be used in pharmaceutical facilities for non-critical water and utility services, provided the pipe grade, temperature, pressure, and chemical compatibility meet the project specifications.
Common applications
Process water distribution – where the required water quality and system design permit PPR
Hot and cold utility water
Chilled water and HVAC systems
Cooling-water circuits
Compressed-air systems – only where the pipe system is rated and approved for compressed air
RO/treated-water utility lines – subject to the required purity and validation requirements
Drainage and wastewater systems
Plant utility lines in production and support areas
Important considerations
For Purified Water (PW), Water for Injection (WFI), sterile processes, or other critical pharmaceutical services, ordinary PPR should not automatically be considered suitable. Material grade, extractables/leachables, hygienic design, sanitization temperature, surface finish, jointing method, and applicable GMP/validation requirements must be checked.
For pharmaceutical plants, PPR is generally more straightforward for HVAC, cooling, utility water and general services than for highly critical product-contact water systems.
